Five Value Added Reasons for using
Incense Cedar for Shutters

Incense cedar is the best wood for close tolerance fabrication, offering the specialized user advantages over pine, fir and other softwoods. Incense cedar ensures natural durability, dependable dimensional stability, excellent workability, exceptional painting, staining and gluing characteristics and useful insulation properties. In addition, its light weight facilitates handling.

1. Natural Durability. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory rates incense cedar one of the most durable and decay-resistant woods. It provides long, dependable service with little or no maintenance, even under high-moisture conditions.

2. Dimensional Stability. Incense cedar is one of the most stable species of lumber. It weathers well with little warping or checking, thus minimizing any tendency to pull loose from fasteners, particularly where exterior applications expose the wood to wide temperature and humidity changes.

3. Workability. The growth characteristics of incense cedar are unique. Growth rings are fine and evenly distributed. There is little difference in the texture of earlywood and latewood. The benefit: superb workability by hand or machine tools. It provides silky smooth, even surfaces ideally suited for precise machining requirements. The uniform texture also makes gluing easier.

4. Paintability. Few softwoods can be as easily prepared for painting or staining and none provides a better quality finished surface. Incense cedar's surface is naturally uniform and homogeneous, smoother than that of pine and raised-grain softwoods. Most important, the species does not contain resin canals or pitch pockets to ruin stain or paint application.

5. Insulation Properties. Incense cedar's "K factor" (thermal conductivity rating) is among the best of all sandalwoods, giving it very dependable insulating properties. It is prized in uses where heat and cold insulation is important.
